In a recent interview, Hu Yi, a member of the Quingyuan County Association of Intellectuals Outside the Party in Lishui, Zhejiang Province, shared his perspective as an art teacher. “As an art teacher, I feel a responsibility to introduce children to the world of art, helping them discover their potential and value while nurturing their sensitivity and creativity towards beauty,” he stated.
Hu Yi began his teaching career in the summer of 1995, stepping onto the stage with a paintbrush in hand and an art portfolio at his side. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to fostering a love for art among rural children, while also giving his school a distinctive identity.
His journey began at Hedi Middle School in Qingyuan County. Despite the challenging conditions at the school, Hu remained committed to organizing art exhibitions each semester, providing a platform for students to express themselves. These small efforts acted like seeds, taking root in the hearts of the children and allowing their artistic talents to flourish.
In 2000, Hu was transferred to Jilong Middle School, where he innovatively introduced pottery classes. “Playing with clay is part of a child’s nature,” he explained. The “Fun with Pottery” course quickly became a hallmark of the school, teaching students not only the craft of pottery but also how to integrate culture and ideas into their creations. This approach transformed pottery into a vital medium for cultural transmission and moral education.
Hu’s dedication has gained widespread recognition. The pottery program at Jilong Middle School has gained notoriety beyond the mountains, becoming a proud emblem of the community. Students have discovered confidence and joy through pottery, with many continuing on artistic journeys that lead them to become pillars of society.
“In Mr. Hu’s class, we not only learned how to make pottery, but we also found a unique joy in learning. Each time we mold the clay, we feel a sense of accomplishment,” shared student Cai Haonan. “Mr. Hu is always patient, encouraging us to think boldly and infuse our ideas into our work.”
In September 2024, Hu Yi was awarded the title of “Outstanding Teacher of 2024.” Reacting to this honor, he expressed his commitment to continuing his role in the United Front work, fulfilling his responsibilities as a member of the association, enhancing social service effectiveness, and with a craftsman’s spirit, weaving more artistic dreams for children, allowing the rural community to blossom artistically.
“Apart from Party members, intellectuals play vital roles as disruptors, leaders, explorers, and guardians in their fields. As an outstanding representative in education, Hu Yi exemplifies the profound significance of education and showcases the excellence of intellectuals outside the Party,” a representative from the Qingyuan County United Front Work Department remarked. Looking ahead, they aim to align with the characteristics of intellectuals outside the Party in the new era, enhancing the organization and continuing to support and encourage these individuals to leverage their expertise in their respective fields, thereby fostering industry growth and collaborative efforts.
