In an alarming incident reported by the Associated Press and Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, Raita Fukuhara, a Japanese man imprisoned for the 1994 murder of a mother and son in Hawaii, was recently killed in his prison cell.
On October 14, local time, a prison guard found Fukuhara severely injured with wounds to his head and neck, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He was later pronounced dead.
According to the Associated Press, local authorities indicated that Fukuhara was attacked and stabbed by another male inmate who shared his cell. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
As per Yomiuri Shimbun, Fukuhara, now 59 years old and originally from Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, was convicted of second-degree murder for killing renowned Japanese fortune teller Koyohime Fujita and her son Goro in Honolulu. After initially fleeing to Japan, he became the first Japanese national to be extradited to the United States under a US-Japan extradition treaty to face trial for murder, resulting in a life sentence.
