London Chinatown Chamber of Commerce 2024 Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration held

On September 18, 2023, the London Chinatown Chamber of Commerce hosted its Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, attracting a diverse crowd of attendees.

In his welcoming remarks, Chamber President Deng Zhuting extended warm greetings and festive wishes to everyone present. He reflected on the organization’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange between China and the UK since its founding, highlighting annual events like the Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar Square, the London New Year’s Parade, and iconic lighting displays, including turning the London Eye and the commemorative column in Trafalgar Square red to honor Chinese culture. Deng emphasized the significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival as not just a cherished traditional holiday for the Chinese people but also a special time for family reunions, expressing hopes for lasting friendship between China and the UK.

Jiang Lei, the Minister-Counselor and Consul General of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, spoke about the Mid-Autumn Festival as a meaningful occasion that embodies the Chinese people’s aspiration for reunion and prosperity. She extended heartfelt holiday greetings to the overseas Chinese community on behalf of the Chinese Embassy and underscored China’s commitment to high-quality development. Jiang expressed a desire to deepen collaboration with the UK in fields like finance, green economy, and artificial intelligence, noting that the overseas Chinese community plays a crucial role as a bridge of cooperation and friendship between the two nations, and encouraged their continued contributions to improving China-UK relations.

Westminster’s Mayor, Robert Rigby, commented on how London Chinatown draws thousands of visitors each day, showcasing the resilience and cultural vitality of the Chinese community. He acknowledged the community’s vital role in Westminster, appreciating the unique cultural perspectives and rich historical heritage they offer, both through long-time residents and visitors.

Throughout the event, several representatives conveyed well wishes and visited senior community members, presenting them with boxes of mooncakes as symbols of happiness and health. The celebration also featured lively performances, including lion dances, traditional dances, acrobatics, face-changing acts, and singing, all contributing to a joyous atmosphere in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
