On October 26, a seminar was held in Beijing to discuss “The Awakened River,” an ecological literary work by Hunan writer Xiao Huiyue. The event highlighted the author’s active concern and contemplation regarding ecological issues.
In “The Awakened River,” Xiao, drawing on his deep knowledge of ornithology and a unique literary perspective paired with keen ecological awareness, portrays the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and ecological realities of his hometown along the Jinjiang River. He crafts a vivid picture of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
Li Yiming, a member of the Chinese Writers’ Association and Secretary of the Secretariat, emphasized that Xiao’s work intricately illustrates the complex relationships among humanity, nature, society, and the self, showcasing the author’s profound insights into environmental issues and humanistic care.
Zheng Yong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Commercial Press, noted that Xiao, connecting with his roots as a returning traveler and viewing the world through the lens of a birdwatching enthusiast and naturalist, captures the seasonal changes, growth of flora, and migratory patterns of birds along the river. This reflects a deep affection for his hometown and a proactive engagement with ecological matters.
Hu Geping, Secretary of the Hunan Provincial Writers’ Association, summarized the achievements in Hunan’s ecological literature since the launch of the “Green Mountains and Clear Waters New Hunan” theme literature creation initiative. He pointed out that since participating in the first Hunan Ecological Literature Seminar in 2018, Xiao has garnered widespread acclaim with works like “Leaping Over the Plateau” and “The Awakened River,” adding significant depth to the ecological literary landscape in Hunan and beyond.
Experts at the seminar shared that this work uniquely awakens respect and love for natural ecology, inspiring a yearning for and pursuit of a beautiful life. They encouraged contemporary writers to actively portray the beauty of China and effectively tell ecological stories through literature, promoting the concept of ecological civilization.
