At a regular press briefing on October 18, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed questions regarding President Xi Jinping’s upcoming attendance at the 16th BRICS Leaders’ Meeting.
A reporter inquired, “China has announced President Xi’s participation in the BRICS summit. What are China’s expectations for this meeting?”
Mao responded, “This year marks the start of ‘big BRICS cooperation,’ making this summit significant as it is the first since the expansion of the BRICS group. The international community is paying close attention. Since its inception, BRICS nations have consistently embraced a spirit of openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation. We remain committed to our foundational goal of unity and self-improvement, and we strive to uphold multilateralism, positioning ourselves as a positive, stable, and benevolent force in international affairs.
During this summit, President Xi will participate in both small and large leader meetings, as well as the ‘BRICS Plus’ leader dialogue and deliver important remarks. He will engage with leaders from various countries on pressing international issues, practical cooperation within BRICS, the development of the BRICS mechanism, and other mutual concerns. China is eager to work alongside all parties to ensure that ‘big BRICS cooperation’ remains steady and sustainable, ushering in a new era of joint self-improvement for the Global South, and promoting world peace and development.”
