In a remarkable twist of events near Poulsbo, Washington, an unnamed woman has found herself in an unexpected situation after decades of feeding local wildlife. For 35 years, she lovingly fed wild raccoons near her residence, a practice she believed to be harmless—until it took a dramatic turn. Recently, she was completely surrounded by around 100 raccoons demanding food, effectively trapping her inside her home.
Feeling threatened by the potentially aggressive behavior of the creatures, she turned to the Kitsap County sheriff’s office for help. According to department spokesperson Kevin McCarty, the raccoon population in the area “exploded” over the last six weeks, leading to the astonishing gathering. “Somehow, the word got out in raccoon land, and they all showed up at her house expecting a meal,” he explained.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they were stunned by the sheer number of raccoons. “They were shocked. They had never seen that many raccoons in one spot. Nobody remembers being surrounded by a swarm of raccoons. This was a first,” McCarty shared, highlighting the rarity of the phenomenon. The sheriff’s office even posted extraordinary footage on social media, showcasing the raccoons as if they were holding a meeting in the woman’s backyard.
However, this influx of raccoons has not been well received by the local community. Resident Wendy Cronk voiced her concerns, mentioning, “I’d say it’s been about the last month or so that I’ve noticed it. I’ve had several raccoons in my yard lately. My dogs have had run-ins with them, and I even had to take one of my dogs to the vet after an encounter with a raccoon.” Cronk expressed her hope that the situation would be resolved soon. “I just hope that somebody steps in and helps her take care of this problem… and hopefully, she’ll stop feeding them,” she added.
