Rafael Nadal shocked fans with an unexpected announcement that he will withdraw from the upcoming Laver Cup, set to start on September 20th. This has led to speculation that the 38-year-old Spanish tennis legend may end his professional season early, bringing him closer to retirement.
In a statement, Nadal expressed his disappointment, saying, “I regret to inform everyone that I will not be able to participate in the Laver Cup next week in Berlin.” Having played in the tournament three times previously, he had looked forward to joining forces with fellow competitors like Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Swedish tennis icon Bjorn Borg, who will be captain for the last time. Nadal added, “To truly support the European team, I must do what is best for everyone. At this moment, there are other players who can help secure a victory for them. I wish the European team the best of luck and will be cheering for them from afar.”
Last year, Nadal faced major setbacks due to a hip injury, and since making his comeback this season, his appearances have been sporadic. After reaching the quarterfinals in men’s doubles at the Paris Olympics, he has not competed again. With this latest withdrawal, discussions surrounding his potential retirement have intensified. However, there may still be a chance to see Nadal in action during the “Six Kingdoms Grand Slam” exhibition match in Saudi Arabia from October 16 to 19, as he serves as the country’s tennis ambassador.
